Who has the best blueberry cake donut in Abilene?
We wanted to find out, so we put 5 donuts from 5 different Abilene donut shops head-to-head in the Great Blueberry Cake Donut Taste Test!
After doing some Google research & polling on our Abilene Eats Instagram stories, we decided to go to:

The Ultimate Blueberry Donut Taste Test
My parents were here visiting when we did the test so we had 4 official judges, plus our honorary 16-month-old judge who is a big fan of donuts.
We rated each donut from 1-5 (1 – not good, 5 – YUM) on 3 factors:
1 – Overall taste
2 – Overall texture
3 – Appearance
Here are our results!
🍩 Jack n Jill Donuts
Flavor – 3.
This one didn’t have a strong blueberry flavor. It was a delicious donut but didn’t really taste like blueberry.
Texture – 3.5.
It was very soft and just slightly dry but had a good glaze crunch on the outside. We missed biting into blueberry pieces.
Appearance – 2.
We didn’t really see any blueberries, which was disappointing and took away some of the appeal.
🍩 Donut Time
Flavor – 3.5.
This one had a stronger blueberry flavor than Jack n Jill’s, but still not super strong.
Texture – 3.
We were disappointed that this one didn’t have any crunch from the glaze. It was soft and slightly more moist than the 1st donut.
Appearance – 4.
We liked the appearance of this one! It had more blue color in the donut with actual blueberries mixed in.
🍩 Abilene Donuts
Flavor – 3.25.
The flavor here was not quite as strong as Donut Time, but stronger than Jack n Jill!
Texture – 3.5.
This one had a much better glaze crunch.
Appearance – 4.
This donut was just as appealing as Donut Time with the blue coloring and the actual blueberries mixed in there.
🍩 Mustang Donuts
Flavor – 4.
We really liked the blueberry flavor on this one! It was a really, really delicious donut.
T – 4.
Oh, the texture was so good on this one. It had a crunchy glaze and a moist interior. So good!
A – 5.
We were immediately won over by the appearance. It was a thicker donut than any of the others. It was blue and had lots and lots of blueberries you could clearly see.
I really thought the one from Mustang Donuts was going to be our winner (they were the winner of our ultimate kolache taste test, after all!)…until I bit into the last contestant (err…the donut…you know what I mean!).

🍩 AM Donuts
F – 4.5.
The flavor of this donut surprised ALL of us! It was not overly sweet, had lots of delicious flavor, and it smells most blueberry (yes, we went back and smelled every donut!).
T – 5.
The texture of this donut was perfect in every way. It was the softest donut of them all and had just the slightest perfect glaze crunch.
A – 4.
This is the only donut that was not blue, which really threw us off. We came in with low expectations, thinking the flavor wouldn’t be strong since the color wasn’t there. There were, however, lots of blueberries mixed in!
There you have it! We’ve proven again that you can’t judge a donut by it’s appearance…it’s what’s on the inside that counts. There is your moral lesson woven into blueberry cake donut deliciousness.
