Vagabond Pizza
Vagabond Pizza uses local and seasonal ingredients to create incredible wood-fired pizza, appetizers, salads, & dessert in Abilene, Texas.
Noah and I snuck away for a mid-week pizza lunch date because we saw Vagabond’s post about their elote arancini (risotto balls) and I couldn’t wait to try it (and I was afraid they might disappear from their menu soon, like some of their specials do!).
If you haven’t tried this place, you need to!
From their starters to their pizza, every bite is always delicious.
Elote Arancini

We started with their elote arancini and, oh, it was so good. How creative to take all of the flavors of street corn and make it into a fried risotto ball! Definitely worth the special trip just for these!
They brought out three large risotto balls sitting on a bed of salsa verde and topped with a crema drizzle. They were steaming hot, perfectly crispy, and filled with all of the flavors of street corn goodness (corn, spicy & creamy chili, cotija cheese, etc).
They were surprisingly filling, too!
Wood-Fired Pizza In Abilene
I have to admit, I had some misconceptions in my head about wood-fired pizza. I’ve had it before and I remember the crust being thin, too crunchy, and dry.
Well, I’m thrilled to report that was not at all the case with Vagabond’s pizza! The crust was perfectly crispy on the outside, perfectly chewy on the inside, and a perfectly smoky flavor from their wood-fired oven. I think it just officially became my new favorite pizza crust.
I love that they have the oven in the corner of the restaurant so that you can see them firing the pizzas!
The Lucia Pizza

We ordered the Lucia pizza because our server said it was a customer favorite. I can see why! That amazing crust was topped with calabrese salami, crispy garlic, mozzarella, and a drizzle of jalapeño jelly.
My spice tolerance is at about a mild salsa level so this was a little bit too spicy for me (I’m guessing from the jalapeño jelly?), but it was so good that I almost didn’t care. 😂
The arancini was so filling that I only had one slice of pizza in the restaurant, but they boxed up the rest and my server assured me that their pizza made amazing leftovers. He was right! It was almost as amazing leftover as it was fresh in the restaurant.
They are always posting pictures of their pizza, appetizer, and dessert specials on Instagram that make my mouth water so I’m sure we’ll be back soon!
Menu
One of my favorite parts of Vagabond Pizza is that they are always rotating their menu to add new specials, use seasonal & local ingredients, and feature the best they have to offer. Their menu changes every Tuesday, so if you want to snag a special that week, make sure to get in by Saturday (they are closed on Sundays).
Make sure to follow their Instagram account to see their current specials like:
- chicken parmesan drumsticks
- panzanella
- the Florence pizza
- the Rambler salad (roast turkey, local spinach mustard greens, butternut squash, toasted farro, and a had boiled egg)
- peach cobbler
- …and so much more!
